Of course, I am not advocating for illegal activities here, but rather pointing out that the Hollywood cliché of a heist crew often mirrors a high-performing research team. Let’s start with the leader of the bank robbery crew. Typically, this person assembles the team, ensuring that all necessary roles are filled with individuals who have top-notch skills in their respective areas. For instance, the getaway driver is always an experienced racer, the safecracker is a tech genius, and the break-in specialist has escaped from prison multiple times. Additionally, the leader ensures that the personalities mesh well together and tries to solve any conflict in the team.
The leader of the gang also designs the master plan, considering all contingencies and scenarios, having backup plans and exit strategies. Through clear communication, they make sure everyone knows exactly what their role is and how each person contributes to the overall success, what needs to be done, and what is expected as a result. On the other hand, they also give each team member the freedom and support to fully develop their potential. For example, they won’t tell the safecracker how to do their job but will provide support, e.g. all the necessary tech equipment (even if it means obtaining an EMP device).
The gang boss also ensures the financing of the heist and, in the end, the fair distribution of the loot. Sounds a lot like a PI, doesn’t it?
But the similarities don’t end there. In these movies, there is always a second-in-command. This person is the designated successor to the boss. They help with the planning, contribute smart ideas, and are responsible for part of the plan. They act as the scout, discreetly surveying the area in advance, studying the guards’ habits, and determining the best time for the heist. Their reports are invaluable for executing the plan precisely and without unnecessary risks. This person still needs to learn the final nuances before they can assemble their own team but is excellently trained by their mentor, the boss. They greatly benefit from the boss’s experience and learn from their example. So here we have the postdoc.
Of course, the explosives expert is also indispensable. They are responsible for opening doors and safes that would otherwise be impenetrable. Their work requires not only extensive technical knowledge but also a high degree of precision and sensitivity. One mistake could jeopardize the entire plan. You probably have someone in mind in your team who fits the bill as the slightly crazy explosive expert. 😊
In addition to these roles, there are always several other specialists in a bank robbery crew, similar to team members in a research project. Each brings specific skills and knowledge that are essential for the success of the heist.
All these specialists work closely together, each contributing their unique abilities to achieve the common goal. They not only need to master their tasks perfectly but also harmonize as a team and be able to rely on each other. The gang leader acts not only as a coordinator but also as a mentor and motivator, ensuring that everyone gives their best and fully commits to the plan.
Together, they achieve something that none of them could accomplish alone. They overcome obstacles, master challenges, and surpass themselves. In the end, success is achieved only through the interplay of individual skills and teamwork – just like in a well-managed research project.
So, if you are considering a second career alongside research, becoming a member of a heist crew might be an option. You already have the skills. 😊
